The Waiting Room
drop by drop we join the whole
press the inside out
learn each other’s secret signals
feel water’s pressure against skin
you can liken the process to birth
or death
the film between each
a gossamer thread plied,
woven to catch every escapee
I watch each attempt
from the safety of the forgotten
that cordoned-off, whiplashed waiting room
inhabited by the damned
though they don’t know it yet
pour myself a drink
watch each brown drop’s promise
& tell myself
not today.
