I think we begin by just writing--as we gain a little skill, we begin reading more poetry--as we begin to gain more skill, we read more--finding your voice is just a first step. I am convinced that learning to solve problems in your poems is a necessary component--this often comes from poetry critique groups. As we learn to solve problems in all sorts of poems, we wrestle with the issues of intent, metaphor and form in all kinds of pieces--
